e46 rear knocking noise

I have heard that roller or needle bearings (as opposed to ball bearings) can display similar symptoms if a roller is failing. By Not nice. BTW it's the cable tension you need to adjust, not the handbrake shoes, but personally I'd adjust the shoes then the cable so all is set correctly. You could try carefully running the car in gear with the wheel just off the ground to see if you can narrow things down.
